Sounds like a great idea to get the team members focused on where they want to go rather than on the common "whatif-thoughts" that fills up the brains of engineers when thinking about the future.
I changed it to "Facebook from the future" and expanded it with voting in the form of "like buttons" (on post-its) and comments where we wrote actions that had lead to each future status message. Now we have prioritized actions for the teams to work with.
I got loads of positive feedback from the two teams I tried it with and I'm thinking about trying this with a management team as well.
